Trieste Interport

From the border to the heart of logistics
A continuous evolution from 1972 to today
The Trieste Interporto was founded as the Fernetti Autoporto in 1972, in response to the needs of the border between Italy and Yugoslavia. Initially dedicated to managing customs flows, it evolved over time into a modern, intermodal logistics center. After the opening of the first area in 1978 and the establishment of Gestione Autoporto Fernetti SpA in 1982, the facility consolidated its role as a strategic customs hub for freight forwarders and carriers.
With the enlargement of the European Union and the fall of its borders in 2004, the Interporto gradually abandoned its functions as a border freight terminal to focus on warehousing, rail logistics, and direct connections, including the one to the Villa Opicina station inaugurated in 2010.
Innovation, growth and international network
A strategic hub for the future of transportation
In 2015, the company took on its current name, Interporto di Trieste SpA, embarking on a decisive expansion phase. In 2017, it acquired the Bagnoli della Rosandra area (240,000 square meters), which became operational in 2018. In 2019, the International Free Zone regime was established and the "FREEeste" terminal was inaugurated.
At the same time, management of the Cervignano freight village was acquired, strengthening the regional logistics network. In recent years, the freight village has expanded its infrastructure with new warehouses, shelters, and rail connections, also hosting major industrial investments such as the BAT plant.
Today it represents a key hub for European logistics, connected to the main international routes and capable of offering companies integrated and sustainable solutions for the future of transport.
